Why Free West Papua? [I]

by Sem Karoba

This is the simple and straightforward answer to the common question, "Why Free West Papua?" commonly asked to campaigners outside West Papua itself.

My answer to this question is that "This struggle is morally, democratically and legally justified." But this does not seem satisfactory to most oudiences. I countinue with further elaborations on the face of a Free and Independent West Papua.

The answer should cover various aspects, in local, regional and global perspectives. Locally, there is a need for protection of an ethinc group with all components or aspects tied to the etnicity (i.e., language, tribe, customs, phylosophies). In regional perspectives, both politically and geographycally, there is a need for political empowerment and security in the South Pacific Region, where West Papua is the door from Asia to the Pacific Region. In Global Perspective, this humanity and its civilisation needs a place where there is enough virgin rainforests and natural resources that can help this life continue. as New Guinea is the place that hosts second largets rainforests on Earth. What Indonesia has done so far is dividing up forests all over West Papua in the hands of military generals and they are slowly but surely exploiting the forests in the name of Development and Natural (state) Security. The impact is obvious, the second largest virgin rainforests on Earth will become just a history no longer than 50 years from now. What does it mean? Obviously it means a great threat to this life, not the lives of Papuans ourselves, but the lives of all communities of beings, particularly all human beings on this Planet Earth.

Audiences normally more interested in knowing further about what a Free and Independent West Papua will offer to the "life" on this Planet Earth, of course. They are not interested in the obliteration of a people, an ethnic group called "Papua" as part of a larger Melanesian Society in the South Pacific Region. I am not surprised at all, if other human beings, or rather modern peoples do not care about their neighbours, let alone the Stone Age Human Beings called Papua in the far remote place of New Guinea. I feel this is totally normal in this kind of society that we have.

Well, a Free and Independent West Papua is about to the Life and Planet Earth a FULL GUARD and TOTAL PROTECTION to the natural environment and particularly the virgin rainforests. This will have a direct impact to the "life" and the Earth will still become a inhabitable planet.

There are other reasons of course, that we Papuans use to justify our campaign for a Free and Independent West Papua:
  1. Narrowly minded Papuans will say, "We are peoples different from those Indonesians, therefore it is our right to be independent, separate from Indonesia"
  2. Political activitists normally have several claims;
    1. that the history of Indonesian occupation today is a result of a military invastion carried out based on the Tripple Command issued by the First President of Indonesia, Soekarno on December 19, 1960;
    2. that the agreement between Indonesia and the Netherlands called "The New York Agreement" of 15 August 1962 was drafted and signed without involvement of any Papuans, without any of their representatives even though the subject of the agreement was about  "Papua" and "Papuans";
    3. The Execution of the Act of Free Choice as stipulated in the New York Agreement was deliberately and extensively violated throughout the implementation;

This statement is so very perfectly worded and could not have been worded better than this. Amazing use of vocabularly, that I have not seen in a long time(even my own English is nowhere near as perfect as this)and such a true and so very sad ongoing saga of West Papua Melanesia Pacific. Viva West Papua!
